Palm Harbor Family Photographer Explains Lifestyle Photography
What Is Lifestyle Photography?
Some people just don't understand what lifestyle photography is and sometimes it takes a little education. ☺️
I often get asked, "What is a lifestyle photographer?" It has everything to do with emotions. Every person's story is unique with raw and beautiful emotions that unfold naturally in an organic kind of way. Lifestyle photography captures that emotion.
So how do you get the emotion to unfold naturally? Here is a closer look at how the magic happens.
You’ll often hear me say, “Now don’t look at the camera, look at each other.” That doesn’t mean that we don’t take some money shots (everyone looking at the camera), but the majority of my images will have multiple people looking away from the camera. When people are looking at each other, they are interacting and when there is interaction, there’s usually emotion.
Let’s take a look at some emotional images.
How To Capture The Emotions Behind An Image
You might think that these posses happen organically. Sometimes they do, but usually it takes a cue from me, the director of the photo shoot. I might say something like “Give your mom a soft kiss on her cheek. Or maybe I say, “Hey Finn, can you see the boogers in your dads nose? For real, can you guess which image I used that cue for? Now dad playing with his two boys below, that was 100% organic.
Lifestyle is capturing the emotion behind the image and often I have to bring that to the surface with my cues.
Here are some more candid photos. Even the puppy got in on the action. Look how she’s looking up at her owner…cuteness overload, right?!?
Why I Say, “Now Don’t Look At The Camera…”
Kids naturally want to play. If I tell them not to look at the camera, they usually won’t until I ask them to. Often it’s the parents that need a little encouragement to not look my way or not tell their children to “look at the camera". We are conditioned to look at the camera, usually by the end of the photo session everyone is just having fun and forget about the camera all together.
