5 Tips For Dressing Your Family For Your Upcoming Photo Session | Tampa Family Photographer

I get asked all the time “What should I wear to my photo session?  So here’s a helpful guide to help you dress for your photo session.

My sessions are fun, laid back, and are taken in some of the most beautiful locations in the Tampa Bay area.

Here are five basic tips to help you get the most out of your session.

  1. Be yourself. If you don’t like wearing dresses then don’t wear one, but if you do like wearing them then go for it. Dress yourself first and then coordinate colors for the others in the shoot. The same applies to children. If they don’t like to wear something and aren’t happy about it, it will show in the photos.  Pick some comfortable fabrics and include the kids in the process of picking out their outfits.

2. Notice that I said “coordinate colors”, not match. Don’t put everyone in the same color.  Diversify the colors and patterns and choose colors that compliment each other. Speaking of patterns, less is more when dressing in patterns.  A nice plaid is fine, however, stay away from super busy patterns that are distracting.

3. Graphic t-shirts and neon colors don’t photograph well and should be avoided. They go out of style quickly and neon colors reflect onto your skin. Since we’re talking about color, I advise all of my families to stay away from the color black. Black doesn’t compliment the earthy and tropical environment that our session will take place in and it often washes out skin tones.  A good starting point is to think of a color that you wear that everyone compliments you on. They give you a compliment because you look amazing wearing it.

4. Make sure the clothing that everyone wears fits.  I know that children grow fast and often we allow some room to “grow into it”. Now is not the time for that. Oversized clothing doesn’t photograph well.

5. Don’t forget that shoes and accessories are equally important and often pull the whole look together. A great outfit with ratty shoes won’t look good. Accessories are also a great place to add some pops of color. Keep it simple however when it comes to big and bulky accessories as we don’t want them to be distracting. Also, don’t be afraid to add a trendy hat if that’s your jive.

I hope this helps you prepare for your upcoming session.  I can’t wait to see you all and look forward to a fun and laid-back evening.
